Can always combine meshes - can even be done just before the game/level kick off. I do this in unity a lot or rely on SRP which is kind of okay but will eat bandwidth

Hello, I'm a new subscriber to your channel. I'm excited and grateful for your informative and helpful videos. I'm also a 3D Environment Artist. I have a question about meshes for houses and large structures. I've learned that when creating houses and large structures, it's recommended to merge all the vertices (Boolean) together if possible and avoid inserting separate objects into each other. This helps save UVs in some cases and prevents some errors when baking lighting with AO in Unreal. I'm not sure if this is still relevant and necessary with current game standards. Do I need to merge all the vertices (Boolean)? Obviously, this will take more time compared to just snapping the blocks together.

Thanks for the question, you can insert meshes into each other, and it's common to do so. But like mentioned, there might be limitations when it comes to the game/workflow you're working on. If this comes to your portfolio, no need to make sure that all the individual pieces are booleans though, just make them into modular pieces and use them accordinly. Hope this helps - Timothy

I mean really you would use trim sheets for textures you are going to use on multiple models. For a boat a simple unwrap would do surely. Unless you are using the texture on many boats.

Good info, one tip though: watch out for verbal ticks, you said “go ahead” about six times in the first two minutes alone, and you punctuate nearly every action with “go ahead” and it’s really distracting after a while 😂

Why do you make shapes in Substance as opposed to modelling them and baking normals? I used to be in games years ago and that's how we would have done it then. It seems you spend a long time creating imitations of 3D shapes using basic shapes and gradients when in the past we could model theme xactly how we want then just bake them in. What is the benefit of this newer method?

This is crazy inspiring the more i watch, like to be Senior Enviorment Artist level in 4 years from getting in the industry is just like wow I had no idea it could be done, I was thinking it would take 10 years to get that level. This is very inspiring, been working on a demo reel for several years, and watching about sculpting being important in Enviornment Art makes sense to me now.

interesting how similar the workflows are in vfx and gaming. A solid base strarting fundamentally trough building up good assets and props is to help achieve better results later... I'd exolore more procedural workflows to implement hdas and ue with the current copernicus builds for houdini that might help to have more variaty and control during scene layout and lighting.

Crazy thing is, the boundary between quality of assets and rendering in vfx and gaming is relatively vanishing.Pretty soon with better hardware everything will be in real time.Procedural tools sppeds up the process providing more time for creativity.

Counter Advice: Don't Specialise. Plenty of room outside of coorporations where well rounded people are sought after. Those skills creating stuff handling mutliple disciplines on your own do pay off elsewhere from AAA.

Or Halo Infinite for that matter. I mean no disrespect to the narrator, as this video is actually quite thoughtful and well made. But the game had 1 environment across the entire campaign and it took them 6 years or more to make, with an absurdly huge budget. And the story was pretty bleak as well... I think any Halo game prior to 5 would have been a much better decision.
